In His Own Words:

Sometimes, you need an escape—not just from everyday responsibilities, but from something as overwhelming as cancer treatment. I’ve lived this reality since 2006, when I was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. That same year, I attended the inaugural Camp Wieser, then called Camp Challenge. It was a transformative three-day retreat, offering cancer patients and their loved ones a much-needed break from the emotional and physical toll of treatment. Attending with my wife and daughters, I realized the true power of community and connection through the camp’s supportive environment.

Over the past 14 years as Camp Director, now preparing for my 17th camp, I’ve seen firsthand the profound impact this retreat has on campers. One of my key contributions has been helping relocate the camp to its current home in the beautiful Santa Cruz Mountains, ensuring private accommodations for each family to support their dignity and comfort during their stay.

For me, Camp Wieser has been healing and life-affirming. Volunteering alongside my family has allowed me to give back in ways I never imagined. I understand what it’s like to need an escape, and I work to provide that space for every camper. My goal is that they leave the retreat with renewed hope and determination to continue their cancer journey, just as Camp Wieser has done for me.
